20+ years of kitchen remodelling experience

We understand the quirks of heritage home kitchen renovation and midcentury houses — sloped floors, tight rooms, and dated wiring. The goal is a kitchen that feels updated, works smoothly, and still fits the character of your home and street.

Whether you’re planning an open concept kitchen remodel, a careful update in a character home, or a classic galley kitchen refresh, we focus on long-term quality and honest guidance about what makes sense for your space and budget.

Why trust us with your kitchen remodel

Choosing a contractor for a kitchen remodel in Victoria is a big decision. The crew is in your home every day, around your family and pets, and managing a large part of your budget.

Capital City Construction has been renovating homes in Victoria, Oak Bay, and Saanich since 2002, with 200+ projects completed and a VRBA CARE Gold Award for Kitchen Renovation. Homeowners choose us because we offer:

1

Deep local expertise
Decades working in Oak Bay and Saanich homes means we know local bylaws, older structures, and how to blend new kitchens into heritage and midcentury houses.

2

Award-winning craftsmanship
Careful framing, proper backing for cabinets and stone, tidy tile work, and solid details you’ll feel every time you open a drawer.

3

Clean, respectful worksites
Daily cleanup, floor protection, and a small, courteous crew. We work as if your home were our own and keep disruption as low as possible.

4

Straight talk and no surprises
We’re upfront about what’s realistic for your wish list and budget. If something will push costs or timelines, you hear about it early — not on the final invoice.

5

Long-term relationships
Many of our kitchen remodels are for repeat clients — a bathroom first, then a basement suite, then the kitchen. Trust is everything to us.

If you value reliability and long-term quality over the lowest quote, we’re likely a good fit.

We recently hired James Latham (owner of Capital City Construction) to do a full renovation of our kitchen, and we couldn’t be happier with the results! His work is top-notch—everything was completed with great attention to detail and craftsmanship. He stayed on budget, which we really appreciated, and the tradespeople he brought in—especially the plumber and electricians—were excellent as well. Throughout the project, he communicated clearly and consistently, keeping us informed every step of the way. He was also incredibly kind and flexible, especially when our schedule needed to change. On top of all that, he was so kind and patient with our dogs, which meant a lot to us. It made the whole process smooth and stress-free. I would highly recommend him to anyone considering a home renovation—you’ll be in great hands!

Real Projects, Real Results

Seeing real projects is often the best way to understand the quality and care that goes into our kitchen renovations in Victoria.

We have hired Capital City Construction for multiple home renovations. Each time we have been very pleased with the outcome. James provides excellent workmanship at a fair price. He listens, provides feedback when asked and will offer suggestions for your consideration. He organizes his trades and follows through each job to completion. James and all his trades show respect for your property, and clean up after themselves. We have recommended James to several of our friends.

Michael & Heather Reid

I am happy to write this recommendation for James and his crew at Capital City Construction. James completely re-modelled our 1938 vintage (and very ugly) laundry room turning it into a beautiful space, complete with pull out drawers, counter and cupboards for storage. He also suggested turning the additional space into a mudroom, with a bench for additional storage (sports equipment) and various hooks for coats. It was beautiful! We have since moved into a brand new home, but I still miss that laundry room. He then moved into our vintage bathroom and tore out the ugly small tiled shower stall and prepped/installed a beautiful marble shower, and painted the bathroom. When we had a new kitchen designed and installed, we hired them to do the painting. His painters are excellent and his cabinet maker is amazing - very creative and makes good use of space. He and his crew have done various jobs for us over the years and we are set to have our new home repainted along with some drywall fixes. James has a great sense of colour, design and style and will offer ideas that you haven't even dreamed of. I have recommended him several times over the years and will continue to do so. He is meticulous in his work and leaves the work site clean and tidy at the end of his work day. He also sticks to your budget! Highly recommend!

Shannon Feeney & Jim Murray

I required a hot tub pad, upper and lower decks, support beams and sun room renovation and flooring throughout the upper area. James Latham and his hard working crew were entrusted with my home and provided timely and incredibly high quality workmanship. The custom cedar work is extremely pleasing. His professional attitude and fair price ensures that I would not hesitate to contact him for future renovations.

Myra

James and his crew have done work for me for the last 10 years. From redoing my kitchen 10 years ago, to redoing bathrooms, bedrooms, living room, porch etc. etc. over the years. I have now moved and they have redone a suite for me and soon will be doing my kitchen. I have recommended James and crew to many friends and family. All are very pleased with the work and glad they have someone they can trust. I would not hesitate to recommend Capital City Construction.

Anne Juteau

James Latham has done two jobs for us, one quite open ended. He is creative, honest, extremely skilled, and has a good sense of which projects are worth pursuing. Can't recommend him highly enough.

JR

James recently completed a small project in our condo. He replaced an existing electric fireplace with an new one and installed a TV over it. He also upgraded hallway closet doors and installed hardwood in another closet. He is reliable, friendly, competent and reasonable. We are very happy with the results.

Frequently asked questions

A well-planned kitchen renovation in Victoria BC can significantly improve both resale value and buyer confidence, especially in established neighbourhoods like Oak Bay and Saanich. Just as important, it can make everyday life more comfortable, enjoyable, and easier — particularly if you’re planning to stay in your home long-term.

Yes. As an end-to-end kitchen renovation company in Victoria BC, we manage the full scope, including electricians, plumbers, gas fitters, and countertop installers from our trusted network. You deal with one main contact, and we coordinate the rest.

Yes. A large part of our work is in heritage and midcentury homes. We’re experienced with heritage home kitchen renovation, knob-and-tube wiring, plaster walls, and sloped floors. We respect the character of these homes while upgrading the structure, mechanical systems, and finishes so the kitchen works for modern life.

We focus on a no surprises approach:

  • Honest conversations about what’s realistic for your budget
  • Clear estimates instead of vague allowances
  • Early communication if we find hidden issues (like rot or outdated wiring)
  • Straightforward options so you can decide how to proceed

With older homes, some unknowns are unavoidable, but we don’t hide them or gloss over them.

There will be a period when your main kitchen is out of commission. Where possible, we help you plan a temporary setup — a small sink, microwave, or hot plate space — so day-to-day life is a bit easier during the renovation. We also work to keep the site contained and as tidy as possible.

Most kitchen remodels in Victoria take several weeks to a few months from demolition to completion, depending on complexity, cabinetry lead times, and permit timelines. We’ll give you a realistic schedule up front and keep you updated if anything affects the timing.

Costs depend on the size of your kitchen, existing conditions, and how extensive the changes are. Full gut renovations with custom kitchen cabinets, heated kitchen floors, new lighting, and structural changes cost more than simpler updates that keep the existing layout. We provide clear, itemized estimates so you can see where your budget is going and adjust scope if needed. If you’re wondering about kitchen renovation cost in Victoria BC, we’re happy to walk through realistic ranges during a consultation.

If you have other questions about kitchen contractors in Victoria BC or how we work, we’re happy to cover them during a consultation.
